New lubricious coating from Bayer MaterialScience meets unique application needs

New York, June 8, 2010 — Today Bayer MaterialScience announces the addition of Baymedix™ CL 300 to its portfolio of coatings for the medical device industry. Baymedix™ CL 300 is a dryout-resistant lubricious coating that, once wetted, can be exposed to air for up to 10 minutes while staying slippery.

Inner Lumen CoatingBaymedix™ CL 300 expands the range of markets that can be served by Bayer MaterialScience’s lubricious coatings. According to Paul Nowatzki, business development manager, Bayer MaterialScience, “Our Baymedix™ CL 100 lubricious coating has attracted a lot of interest, but the Baymedix™ CL 300 is a good option in otherwise challenging applications like acidic environments with pH less than five, or for devices that are exposed to air for long periods during use.”

The dryout-resistant Baymedix™ CL 300 relies on a special material formulation which contains a natural osmolyte to help retain water. Besides slowing dry-out in air, it can be used in environments in the body that tend to draw out moisture from coatings, like the mucosal tissue of the urethra.

Lubricious coatings are used widely on intermittent urinary catheters, but not all coatings are created equal. Data from Bayer MaterialScience suggest that Baymedix™ CL 300 provides better durability and a lower coefficient of friction (<0.02) than competitive intermittent catheter coatings. One advantage of Baymedix™ CL 300 is that its lubricity is durable, withstanding 50 or more test cycles. The durability is provided, in part, by the sacrificial nature of the coating. Explains Nowatzki, “Baymedix™ CL 300 slowly wears away over time, while Baymedix™ CL 100 is designed not to degrade at all under stress.“ This means Baymedix™ CL 300 is suitable for some applications and not others. It has been shown to be non-sensitizing, non-cytotoxic and non-irritant in ISO 10993-compliant tests.

The application process for this coating system is traditional and straightforward. A primer coat of polymer in solvent is dipped or sprayed onto a part to increase adhesion. Once the primer is dry, the lubricious top coat is applied and dried. The product has been successfully demonstrated on a variety of plastic substrates.

Baymedix™ CL 300 has already been supplied to selected companies for evaluation, and certain samples can be coated at Bayer MaterialScience’s global Medical Coatings Development Centre in Sheffield, England. Assisting customers with development and implementation is a key part of Bayer MaterialScience’s strategy for servicing the medical device industry.
